합집합

어떤 두 집합 [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]와 [math]\displaystyle{ Y }[/math]의 합집합(union)은, [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math]에 속하거나 [math]\displaystyle{ Y }[/math]에 속하는 원소를 모아 놓은 집합으로, 기호로는 [math]\displaystyle{ X \cup Y }[/math]로 적는다. 예를 들어, [math]\displaystyle{ \{ 1,\ 2,\ 3 \} }[/math]과 [math]\displaystyle{ \{2,\ 4,\ 6 \} }[/math]의 합집합은 [math]\displaystyle{ \{ 1,\ 2,\ 3,\ 4,\ 6 \} }[/math]이다.

성질

• [math]\displaystyle{ X \subset \left( X \cup Y \right) }[/math].
• [math]\displaystyle{ \left( X \cap Y \right) \subset \left( X \cup Y \right) }[/math].

임의의 두 유한집합 [math]\displaystyle{ X,\ Y }[/math]에 대해 다음이 성립한다.

• [math]\displaystyle{ n(A \cup B) = n(A)+n(B)-n(A \cap B) }[/math].
